The Florida End-of-Course (FLEOC) assessments measure student achievement in key high school subjects and play a central role in course grading, promotion, graduation, and school accountability. This article explains how FLEOC assessments are scored and how to interpret the results to support student success.
What You’ll See in FLEOC Scoring
FLEOC assessments are administered in the following high school subjects: Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology 1, Civics, and U.S. History.
Each test includes a combination of multiple-choice and technology-enhanced items.
- Algebra 1 and Geometry are aligned to the Florida Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) standards.
- Biology 1, Civics, and U.S. History are aligned to the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS).
How FLEOC Is Scored
Raw Score – The raw score is the number of points earned from correct responses across all item types. This score is not reported directly to students or schools. It is used internally to determine the scale score.
Scale Score – The scale score adjusts for differences in test difficulty across administrations. This ensures consistent scoring year over year. Scale score ranges may vary slightly by subject and are used to determine the student’s achievement level.
FLEOC Achievement Levels
Students receive one of five achievement levels based on their scale score:
- Level 5: Highly likely to succeed in future coursework
- Level 4: Likely to succeed in future coursework
- Level 3: Demonstrates satisfactory performance; may need additional support
- Level 2: Shows limited success and likely needs substantial support
- Level 1: Indicates inadequate performance; intensive support required
For most subjects, a Level 3 or higher is considered proficient.
In Algebra 1, students must earn at least a Level 3 to meet Florida’s graduation requirement.
Course Impact
FLEOC assessments count for 30% of the student’s final course grade in the corresponding subject.
In Algebra 1, passing the EOC is mandatory for graduation in the state of Florida.
Summary
FLEOC scoring combines raw scores, scale scores, and achievement levels to give a full picture of student performance. These scores impact final grades, readiness for future courses, and graduation eligibility. Understanding how scores are calculated allows educators to better plan support strategies.
Best Practices
- Prioritize support for students near the Level 2 to Level 3 threshold—they often need just a small push to reach proficiency.
- Use assessment insights to target specific skill areas that need reinforcement.
- Reinforce key standards through frequent, short-form practice (e.g., bell ringers, warm-ups) in the weeks before testing.
